leadingtone:

Top: A well-known caricature in silhouette of Brahms out for a walk; for many years, a stroll to The Red Hedgehog— his favorite Vienna tavern—was part of his daily routine. Brahms was comfortable in the raucous atmosphere there, where he could take a meal, enjoy good beer and cigars, and watch the evening unfold.

Bottom: Detail from the manuscript of the opening of Brahms’ Symphony Nº. 3, showing the sforzando declamation in the contrabasses of Brahms’ musical motto “F-Ab-F,” or “Frei, aber froh’“ (“Free, but happy.”) His friend and mentor Joseph Joachim had earlier used the motto “Frei, aber einsam” (“Free, but lonely”). Though it is rumored that Brahms was no stranger to the services of the questionable ladies inhabiting the Vienna Woods, he never developed romantic attachments. Much has been made of his feelings for the widowed Clara Schumann, but his devotion toward her was ultimately more filial than amorous.
